How to Stop a Runny Nose Caused by a Cold or Allergies
Can’t stop sneezing? Chances are your nose is running faster than a waterfall. But what exactly is a runny nose? A runny nose, or "rhinorrhea," is the nasal discharge of mucus. "Rhino" means "nose" and "rrhea" means "flow" or "discharge." It is caused by excessive mucus production, leading to watery nasal secretions that either drip from the nostrils or down the throat. While often due to a cold or flu, allergies can also cause a runny nose. Here are some smart ways to stop it:
1. Drink Plenty of Fluids
Hydrate with water and chicken broth to thin mucus and help it drain faster. Warm tea or milk can have a soothing effect.
2. Get Enough Rest
Rest is essential for recovery when you're unwell and gives you a break from constant nose-blowing.
3. Apply Warm Compresses
Place a warm compress on your nose and forehead to relieve nasal pressure and congestion. A warm, damp cloth works just as well.
4. Use Steam
Sit in the bathroom with hot water running in the shower or inhale steam from a bowl of hot (not boiling) water. This soothes nasal membranes.
5. Use a Humidifier
A clean humidifier or cool mist vaporizer increases moisture in the air, keeping nasal passages moist and helping mucus drain faster.
6. Try Saline Nasal Spray or Drops
Use saline spray or drops 3-4 times daily to soften nasal membranes, relieve a runny nose, and improve breathing.
7. Use the Right Over-the-Counter Medications
OTC medications can relieve symptoms effectively:
- AXIV Sinus SEVERE: Dries nasal passages and relieves congestion.
- AXIV Allergy Relief: Best for allergy-related runny noses.
- AXIV NightTime Multi-Symptom Relief: Alleviates nighttime symptoms, dries a runny nose, and calms a cough for restful sleep.
